A jackhammer is a percussive drilling machine that is used to break up and dig through concrete, stone, and other surface materials. They function as both hammers and chisels. Jackhammers are used for a wide range of applications, including a variety of road, sidewalk, rail, and excavation projects.
The Three Different Types of Jackhammers
Jackhammers work by rapidly and repeatedly striking a surface with great force. There are three types of jackhammers. Which one a road or construction crew uses depends upon the project and the type of surface being demolished:
- Pneumatic hammers are the most common type of jackhammer. They work by using compressed air supplied through a hose. They’re typically powered by air compressed to about ten times atmospheric levels and can strike a surface as fast as 25 times per second.
- Hydraulic hammers are similar to pneumatic hammers but use hydraulic fluid instead of compressed air. These types of hammers are commonly connected to a machine like a backhoe or tractor. It is typically used along with other machines like a tractor, skid steer loader, backhoe, etc.
- Electric hammers are powered by electricity and are smaller and have a more limited capacity.
Several different bits can be attached to a jackhammer, making them more versatile and suitable for a variety of jobs. Spades, points, flat tips, flex chisels, stake drivers, and bushing tools are just a few examples of the kinds of bits that can be attached to a jackhammer.
History of the Jackhammer
Jackhammers have been around for a long time. Jackhammers were among the first pneumatic tools developed during the 1800s. The first jackhammer, called a percussion drill, was developed by Jonathon Couch in 1849. These early jackhammers were used primarily for mining operations.
Today’s jackhammers are used to perform a number of different tasks, such as breaking pavement, drilling through rock, making large holes, breaking up hardened soils, creating channels for pipes, wires, and cables, and more.
Where to Find the Best Jackhammer Hoses
A jackhammer’s performance depends upon the hose that supplies it with power. Damaged or inferior hoses can make a jackhammer less efficient.
ASJ Industrial Hose & Fittings is a leading provider of jackhammer hoses to companies throughout North America. Our sister site, JackhammerHose.com, offers a wide selection of high-quality Continental factory-made in America jackhammer hoses. This includes the Aquahammer, a twin-lined jackhammer hose engineered to lower dust and debris buildup, protecting the worker and the surrounding environment.
Constructed of EPDM synthetic rubber with a brick red or yellow color, Continental jackhammer hoses are reinforced with a 4-spiral textile layer construction and come with a factory-crimped universal coupling. They have a temperature range of -40°F to 210°F/-40°C to 99°C. and can handle pressures of up to 300 pounds psi.
