Garden hose fittings are available in many forms, sizes, and styles, depending on the application. They are generally cast from brass, nickel, chrome, or plastic. There are many thread standards; 3/4″ is the standard in the United States (this is why it’s known as the garden hose thread).
Garden hoses have a male coupling on one end, with a female coupling on the opposite end. The female connector is used to connect the hose to a water source, such as an outdoor faucet. The threads on the inside of the female fitting are compatible with those on the outside of the faucet. The male connector is used to connect the hose to a number of attachments, such as sprinklers, spray guns, cleaning wands, and special nozzles.
