With nearly 40 years in the commercial hose business, we often get asked, “What’s the difference between hydraulic fittings and adapters?” Many assume that they’re synonymous terms and are inherently the same thing. In reality, fittings and adapters are two different hydraulic accessories that serve different purposes.
Hydraulic Fittings
A fitting is a piece that allows one to install pipes, hoses, and tubes into a hydraulic system. With a properly installed hydraulic fitting, hydraulic fluid can safely flow and stay within the conductor without the threat of leaks or pressure fluctuations. In addition, the right fitting can allow one to create split flow, change the direction of the flow, or even alter the elevation of lines.
These small, sturdy accessories are typically made of machined and forced steel. On rare occasions, they might be made of steel billet.
Hydraulic Adapters
As for hydraulic adapters, these devices help connect at least two thread sizes or forms together. Sometimes, adapters also serve as fittings, but ultimately, they have their variances. For instance, the use of an adapter can help one meet or exceed certain component standards including JIC, NPT, Metric, and SAE.
And, like other types of adapters out there outside of the hydraulic hose industry, hydraulic adapters, too, can help connect two components that would otherwise not be compatible with one another.
Ultimately, while interchangeably used, fittings and adapters are two different components that vary in terms of how they’re used. In the end, both devices are useful in their own unique way. Generally, adapters help unify a hydraulic system together while fittings allow one to connect plumbing to your hydraulic unit.
