Keeping up with smart fluid hydraulics

The fluid systems industry is on the cusp of a revolution. New technological advances have recently given us “smart pumps,” which is exactly what they sound like: equipment that can pump liquids with very accurate suction flow measurements. Let us tell you all about these new developments and what they mean for the industry.

A new age for hydraulics

According to a recent McKinsey report, the global industrial-pump market is expected to be worth somewhere between $85 and $90 billion by 2025. A big chunk of this amount can be attributed to smart fluid hydraulics, of which there are five main components:

  • Centrifugal pumps: Centrifugal pumps are a type of pump that adds kinetic energy to a fluid using a spinning impeller. Back in 2019, they accounted for a global market size of over $30 billion.
  • Positive-displacement pumps: These pumps pressurize fluid by trapping a fixed amount of fluid with each piston stroke before squeezing and displacing it.
  • Specialty and other pumps: A wide category that includes jet engines, electromagnetic power, and gas compressor technology.
  • Pump sets: A combination of a fluid hydraulics unit and a drivetrain unit.
  • Pump services: This category encompasses plant maintenance as well as maintenance of asset infrastructure. It also includes attempts to reduce operating expanses.

What this means for the industry

The steel, oil, gas, pharmaceutical, and even food and beverage industries all stand to benefit from new advances in hydraulic developments.

For example, working side by side with AI applications, the food and beverage industry can use smart fluid-hydraulic pumps to boost yields by supporting the delicate treatment of smaller batches of different products. This has the desired effect of facilitating energy cost savings, among other beneficial upsides.
