Let’s Talk Hoses – A Short Glossary of Hose-Related Terms

Let’s Talk Hoses – A Short Glossary of Hose-Related Terms

Selecting the right hose or hose fitting for an application requires a basic knowledge of the industry terms. That’s why ASJ has put together this short glossary of the frequently used terms pertaining to hoses and hose assemblies:

Abrasion Resistance – The ability of a hose to withstand wear and tear from friction and mechanical action.

ANSI – American National Standards Institute, Inc.

ASME – American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

ASTM – American Society for Testing and Materials.

Bend Radius – The minimum radius a hose can be bent without kinking or damaging it.

Chemical Compatibility – The ability of a hose material to resist degradation when exposed to specific chemicals.

Clamp – A device used to hold or secure objects tightly together to prevent movement or separation. Common types include worm gear clamps, T-bolt clamps, and spring clamps.

Coupling – A device used to connect two hoses or a hose to a fitting.

Crimping – The process of securing a fitting to a hose using a crimping tool.

End Fitting – The terminal connector attached to the end of a hose to allow it to connect to other equipment.

Flexibility – The ability of a hose to bend or flex.

Gauge – An instrument used to measure and display the pressure of a fluid within a system.

Hose Assembly – A hose with fittings installed on both ends, ready for use.

Hose Fittings – Components used to connect, terminate, control, and change the direction of hoses in various industrial and mechanical applications.

Inner Tube – The innermost layer of a hose, designed to be in contact with the conveyed material.

Outer Cover – The outermost layer of a hose, providing protection against environmental factors and abrasion.

Pressure Rating – The maximum pressure at which a hose can operate safely.

Push-to-Connect Fittings – Allow hoses to be connected by simply pushing them into the fitting, often used in pneumatic systems.

Quick Connect/Disconnect – A type of coupling that allows for easy and rapid connection and disconnection of hoses.

Reinforcement – The material embedded within a hose provides strength, durability, and resistance to pressure.

Temperature Resistance – The ability of a hose to resist either high or low temperatures.

Threaded Fitting – A fitting with threads that allow it to be screwed onto or into another component.

Valve – A device that regulates, directs, or controls the flow of a fluid (liquids, gases, slurries) by opening, closing, or partially obstructing various passageways. Common types of valves include ball valves, gate valves, and check valves.

Working Pressure – The maximum pressure a hose can handle during normal operation.
