WHEN THINGS GET HOT, YOU NEED A HOSE THAT CAN HANDLE THE HEAT

Many industrial processes involve the transportation of heated liquids. The hoses and connections used in these applications have to be specially designed and constructed to function efficiently and safely under high temperatures. Some examples of hot liquids used in industrial applications include:

  • Hot water and steam. Steam temperatures can range from 212°F (100°C) at atmospheric pressure to over 600°F (315°C) in superheated steam applications. Hot water – 140°F (60°C) to 200°F (93°C) – is typically used for washing, cleaning, and heating.
  • The heat transfer fluids used in chemical processing commonly operate between 300°F (150°C) and 750°F (400°C).
  • The lubricating oils used in engines and machinery operate at temperatures up to 300°F (150°C).
  • While ammonia is typically used in low-temperature applications, it can be heated to around 300°F (150°C) for specific applications.
  • The asphalt used in road construction and roofing is usually heated to temperatures of 250°F (120°C) to 350°F (180°C).
  • For chemical solutions, such as acids and alkalis, the operating temperature depends on the specific chemical and application but generally ranges up to 300°F (150°C).

INDUSTRIES USE HOT LIQUIDS FOR A RANGE OF APPLICATIONS

  • The food and beverage industry uses hoses to transport hot liquids for pasteurization and sterilization as well as cleaning and sanitizing.
  • The chemical and pharmaceutical industry uses hoses to sterilize equipment and materials in the pharmaceutical industry and transport the hot solvents used in extraction processes to obtain compounds from raw materials.
  • The petroleum industry uses hoses to inject hot water or steam into oil wells to reduce the viscosity of the oil, making it easier to extract. Hoses are also used in the distillation processes to separate different components of crude oil.
  • The energy sector uses hoses to transport the hot water and steam used for power generation.
  • The pulp and paper Industry uses hoses during the pulping and papermaking processes.
  • The automotive industry uses hoses during the testing and development phase as well as the manufacturing process.
  • The metalworking and manufacturing use hoses for cleaning and degreasing.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING A HOSE FOR HOT LIQUIDS

It’s important to choose the right hose and connections to ensure safe and efficient operations. Some of the factors that need to be considered when manufacturing hoses to handle high-temperature applications:

  • Material selection, such as high-temperature polymers, reinforced rubber,
  • or metal alloys.
  • Structural design, including inner tubing, outer covering, and reinforcement layers.
  • Manufacturing processes, like extrusion method, braiding and spiraling, vulcanization (for rubber hoses), and quality control and testing.

Some of the hoses used to transport high-temperature hoses include:

  • Silicone hoses have a temperature range of up to 500°F (260°C)
  • Stainless steel braided hoses – certain designs have temperature ranges up 1500°F (815°C).
  • Teflon (PTFE) hoses are built to handle temperatures up to 500°F (260°C).
  • Rubber hoses (EPDM, Nitrile, etc.) can withstand various temperatures – EPDM can handle up to 300°F (150°C), while Nitrile can handle up to 210°F (99°C).
  • Metal hoses, constructed from stainless steel and other alloys are resistant to extreme temperatures – up to 1500°F (815°C), chemical reactions, and high pressures.
