Hose clamps are tools used to secure hoses, pipes, or tubing to fittings or other objects. There are many different types of hose clamps. One of the most common types of hose clamps is worm gear clamps.
Worm gear clamps (aka gear clamps, screw clamps, worm drive clamps, and hose clamps) are a type of adjustable mechanical fastener that consists of a metal band (typically made from galvanized or stainless steel or another durable material) with a housed, screw-like worm gear mechanism attached to it. The housing and the screw are used to open and close the clamp band. A series of perforations along the band engages with the worm gear mechanism, allowing the band to be tightened or loosened.
Worm gear hose clamps are very easy to use. You simply connect the hose to a connection and wrap the band around both, passing the free end through a buckle or slot in the housing. When the screw is turned, it acts as a worm gear, pulling the threads of the band, causing it to tighten around the hose or line. The screw is turned in the opposite direction to loosen the band.
It’s important not to use too much torque while tightening the band. Too much torque can strip and damage the worm gear mechanism.
Worm Gear Hose Clamp Applications
The first worm gear clamp was patented in 1896 by Swedish inventor Knut Edwin Bergström. Their main use is to secure tube and hose connections, ensuring a tight fit that prevents fluid and air from leaking. They are very versatile tools that can be adjusted to fit a wide range of hose and pipe diameters.
Today, worm gear hose clamps are used for numerous applications in several industries. Plumbers use them to create secure, watertight pipe fittings and seals. The automotive industry uses clamps to secure radiator hoses and other lines and hoses. They are used in residential and commercial plumbing and HVAC systems. Mini worm gear hose clamps are used for smaller diameter lines and hoses.
